Parent Improvement
The Parent Self-Improvement Project (PSIP) is an adult education program that provides parents and other adult learners with Pre-GED and GED instruction in reading comprehension, essay writing, mathematics, science and social studies. The program also assists participants in developing and enhancing their life skills, financial literacy skills, parenting skills and work readiness skills. Through its various components, the Parent Self Improvement Project (PSIP) empowers its parents and other adults to engage in lifelong learning that has a positive impact on their roles as workers, family members and community members.
PSIP holds class Monday –Thursday, 9:30AM to 1:30PM at the following location:

District residents who are at least 18 years of age are invited to attend an orientation session in order to apply for the program. To register, please call (202) 783-0030 for orientation dates and registration instructions.
Goals
The goal of the Parent Self-Improvement Project is to equip parents and other adults with the skills that they need to improve their own quality of life and that of their families. PSIP provides the following services to its participants:
- Placement into a Pre-GED or a GED level class based upon CASAS test scores;
- Pre-GED / GED instruction in math, reading, social studies, science, and writing
- Training on basic computer use and Microsoft office;
- Work readiness classes and opportunity to earn Work Readiness Credential;
- Life Skills training;
- Parenting workshops through the CBM Fatherhood Initiatives;
- Referrals for job placement providers, job training programs and social services;
- Case management and post program follow-up;
- Assistance registering for GED Exam including payment of registration fee;
- Field trips and Family Day activities;
- Achievement incentives.
These Goals are achieved through:
- Instruction in basic adult education
- Life skills and workforce preparation
- Résumé preparation and work readiness instruction that provides parents with helpful job skills
The Parent Self-Improvement Program is funded by the D.C Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation, the D.C State Education Office (SEA) and the Fannie Mae Foundation.
