Concerned Black Men National (CBM) hosted two student groups from InterVarsity Christian Fellowship USA in March to help support adult learners at the CBM Mayfair Mansion Family Service Center in Northeast Washington, DC. Nearly 40 students from universities across America helped tutor Parent Self Improvement Project (PSIP) participants .

“The program focuses on helping parents get the education and training they need to support their families,” said Education Coordinator Latoya Boyd. “CBM has been working to improve the lives of children for nearly half a century, and helping parents is a big part of that.”

In 2013, 70 percent of PSIP participants increased their educational proficiency by at least one grade level. Individuals who complete training go on to earn their GED, attend college and get better paying jobs.

“People here are so friendly,” said Hansen Pei a student majoring in mathematics at Temple University. “I love the freshness here. I am very touched seeing people over my age who are still studying.”

Pei an international student from China and his colleagues are members of InterVarsity, a nationwide campus-based fellowship organization that emphasizes leadership and faith. The organization has volunteered with CBM since 2011.

“As a national organization with a child and family focus, we are always looking for companies, individuals, and groups who want to impact America’s under-served communities in a powerful way.” Wayne Salter, Parent and Family Services Director said. “We partner to help build and reinvent lives.”

“It’s been very fun.” Said Joseph Leis a student at Berea College in Kentucky. My heart is moved to see when people finally understand something. It’s extremely gratifying. I happen to be in the position to help someone; but I, myself, am learning so much.”
