CBM CARES® National Mentoring Initiative
27-07-2018
Concerned Black Men – National Organization (CBM) launched CBM CARES® National Mentoring Initiative, a uniquely designed mentoring effort that combines a school-based, group mentoring process with a one-to-one mentoring experience for middle school boys.
While Concerned Black Men always has provided mentoring services nationwide where CBM chapters are located, pilot projects supporting the intensive services offered by the CBM CARES® National Mentoring Initiative are presently operating in the following communities: Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Prince George’s County, MD, Richmond, VA and Columbia, SC. “Concerned Black Men believes that invoking African American men to mentor young makes of color is vital if we intend to increase high school graduation rates nationally” says Reginald L. Broddie. Executive Director of CBM. “CBM CARES® offers an evidenced-based mentoring experience at a time when our boys begin to consider school attendance and achievement as unimportant,” states Broddie. “This type of direct involvement in their lives is necessary if we are to keep them involved and engaged.
“Within the next 10 years …” notes Johnny Giles, CBM’s National Chair “…we hope to take CBM CARES® to every major African American community in the nation, so we ask the public to visit the website to follow our progress.” The CBM CARES® National Mentoring Initiative is funded in part the office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Office of Justice Programs, Department of Justice.
Since 1975, Concerned Black Men has been providing services to young people and their families. CBM Programs meaningfully touch the lives of thousands of children daily. CBM’s national level programs have rigorous evaluation components that monitor and assess progress and effectiveness. Through the work of a nationwide network of chapters located in 32 cities, and an experienced and credentialed staff in the Nation’s Capital. CBM works to help youth and their families overcome life’s most difficult challenges.
